Accomplishing Things When I'm Not Motivated
02/06/2015

Hi Dr. Laura,

What I do to start being productive when I'm not feeling motivated:

  1. If my lack of motivation is because I'm worn out, I give myself a day or two to rest and re-energize.

  2. I remind myself of how much better I will feel once the dark cloud of responsibility is eased by progress.

  3. I break the process down into smaller and more manageable pieces so I do not become overwhelmed and discouraged by all there is to do.

  4. I take one of the smaller chunks and do it, receiving appropriate relief and gratification now that I'm on the path to accomplishing the goal. Each such step makes what's left, smaller.

  5. Finally, when most of the easy or smaller stuff is done, I'm left with one or two larger pieces. Fixing the goal firmly in my mind, I usually just power through until completion, keeping firmly in mind the end is in sight and I will feel such relief and satisfaction that it will be worth it.
It's a great way to grow, learn skills and gain true self-respect. Who knew that it would also gain the respect of others?

Thanks for all you do!

Dale
