Treating Kindly Goes Both Ways

My father was a fighter pilot in the Air Force. When I was growing up, there were times when he was gone for long stretches of time, leaving my mom at home alone with all 5 kids. When he was at home, it seemed like every evening during dinner, she would nag at him.

The night before my wedding, my father told me that the only advice he had for me was not to nag my husband the way my mother had done to him. This moment acted as a reminder and ultimately kept me from turning into an unpleasant wife.

Many years later, I pulled up behind a car that had a bumper sticker on the back.

It read:
"Treat her like a thoroughbred and she won't be a nag."
