Why Our 44 Years of Marriage Have Worked

Although I have probably missed the opportunity to weigh in on the issue of successful marriages, I think that I can offer a few thoughts on how it has worked for us.

  1. We have always talked. About everything: finances, children, our relationship, etc. It takes many years to learn how to "argue" and come to a conclusion. We respect each other's opinion and sometimes my idea prevails and sometimes hers does. You need to be flexible. It works.

  2. Our decisions are based on what is best for US. Not me, not her, but us. I see very little of this nowadays as marriages have devolved into "what is in it for me?"

  3. We laugh, A LOT! Face it, the world is a funny place and we have learned that we are going to take advantage of what other people and ourselves do as we try to get through the day.

  4. And lastly, as you age, you realize that there will ALWAYS be problems. Family problems, health problems, etc. People marrying today don't seem to understand that problems occur in all families and you don't start turning on each other when bad things occur. Even, you, Dr. Laura, have problems, but your show is not based on what is going on in your life, but rather in helping your listeners. If you didn't have to deal with day-to-day issues then all you would be is just another doctor with a degree in psychobabble. What makes the show worth listening to is the combination of your degree with the real world experiences that you have had.

I am hoping that you live to be 100, but that may be for selfish reasons!

Thanks,

Paul
