20 Great Minutes Changed My Husband's Attitude
Dr. Laura,
About 3 years ago, I bought your book "The Proper Care & Feedings of Husbands" and "Woman Power." I read them, highlighted, noted, journaled, and applied it all after having baby #1. Our marriage suffered the typical first child challenges and we survived.
Fast forward to tonight...We have moved 3 more times (he is Active Duty Army), now have 3 children ages 3.5 years, 21 months, and 6.5 weeks (Thank the Lord above he does sleep through the night and is gaining weight well), 3 dogs and 9 puppies (5 days old). The past few weeks I have noticed that I am a little moody, due to stress and I a big enough to admit I'm wrong for taking it out on my family. However, I have noticed my husband being more withdrawn and moody too. The last 2 Tuesday's he's spoken extremely rude to me in front of a couple who join us for weekly game/movie night. I ended crying myself to sleep both weeks after they left. I did tell him how much it hurt and how embarrassed I was. He did try to watch his speaking in front of others the rest of the week.
I know that sometimes I become overwhelmed with all that I have to do with 3 kids, house, and Mount Washmore (aka Laundry to some). Since I was still kinda hung up over it and we are involved in the ministry of our church, I sought God in prayer. I always want my husband to shine in all he does whether it is the Army or our church, I know that I can move that man to the mountain or drag him into the depths of hell. Then I remembered your book. So I grabbed it and started reading...the chapter titles. SEX!!!! That's it; my man needed the intimate side of me. So after church, I came home acting like I was doing all my "normal" routine, change kids, put them to bed, feed baby and put him to bed, etc. All the while I'm waiting to make sure all the kids were OUT like a light!
I went and visited my husband in his room (side note: I have arthritis and need heat to keep from hurting, he likes to sleep with the windows open when it is -6 degrees outside...no I'm not joking. So we sleep in different rooms). It took 20 minutes without nagging I got an "I'm sorry for my attitude to you", and a total change in his attitude and tone! When asked what put me in the mood, I told him "you...the thought of just you... preaching or in uniform. I love everything about you." He kissed me goodnight with the biggest smile I've seen in a long time.
I am waking up to fix him a home cooked breakfast and lunch to take to work.
Well I have more reading in your book to do.
Thank you for motivating me to change...again
Happy (VERY HAPPY) Army Wife/Girlfriend and SAHMommy of 3
