Carpooling Can Make A Difference

Hi Dr. Laura:

I am writing to thank you for telling a caller to continue to drive her daughter's teammate to sports practice, even though the teammate's mother didn't pull her own weight in the car pooling department.

You see, Dr Laura, I was that young girl, only my mom didn't want to get up in the morning to take me to school. When all of my friends organized a carpool, my mom begrudgingly agreed. It was back in the seventies where every family had a station wagon with ample room to fit EVERYONE on our block...but sadly my mom's choices to drink at night made it difficult for her to get up and drive to school, let alone even wake up with my brother and sister and me at six-thirty am. I am grateful for the moms who allowed me to ride to school each day, who never complained that my mom wasn't pulling her weight. I was embarrassed, but they never said anything. I think that they felt a bit sad for me because my parents were divorced and my mom was very sad for many, many years. I ask your caller to let that young lady ride in her car, for the years go very fast, and she might make a difference in a young woman's life. It is a very small price to pay to help a child.

I am a mom, and my husband's girlfriend, and I HAVE ALWAYS PICKED UP AND DROPPED OFF MY CHILDREN at school, if there is a conflict, then my husband and best friend are available to help. I cherish the time in the car with my kids together. And now that my oldest is driving and away at college I miss her. I am proud to say that I GET up with my children to make breakfast, pack lunches, and help with the morning hustle and bustle!

Years ago, moms like ME looked at the bigger picture...and allowed a young girl to ride with them without exception to school each day. I wonder what might have happened if they didn't.

All the best to you Dr. Laura!! YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE EACH AND EVERY DAY!

Please use only my first name. My mom has since passed away and I want you to know she was an EXCELLENT grandmother...she just needed a little time to figure it all out.

J.
