Making The Grade

In reading your blog on grades and responsibility I recalled something from our local high school graduation. This is what I wrote to our son:

In 2004 when Christy graduated I will always remember that as the principal introduced the scholastically gifted graduates who had worked hard and achieved 4.0 grade points, the audience of their friends and families rewarded them with vigorous applause. Closely after that, the principal announced the members of the graduating class who would be joining the military. These young heroes received their reward from an audience who gave them a standing ovation. That is one of the main reasons I am so proud to be a Sandite.

Later in your sophomore or junior year the high school put on a musical salute to veterans. This occurred at a time when much of the media were turning against the war in Iraq. So after the assembly I wrote your principal and told him that I was proud of the school's decision to support the military.

Now five years later we have attended your graduation. Just as in the 2004 graduation the "A"-students received loud applause. But you and your fellow warriors received a well deserved standing ovation. You should also know that your parents, brother and sister, grandparents, aunt and uncle and cousins were there proudly cheering for all of you, but mainly for our own personal hero.
