The Rugged Complexion
I just listened to a gentleman who was calling in for your opinion on how best to handle his acne scars. You recommended some procedure, which was okay, I guess, but then you went on to say that it was all in how he perceived himself…that more than likely HE was more worried about and preoccupied with the scars than anyone else.
You are SO right.
I am 44 now, but at age 17, a junior in high school, I had never had a boyfriend. Most of the boys I had known since elementary school, so dating one of them would have felt like dating a brother…ew. Anyhoo, I got my first retail job and met a 19 year old boy there. He was slender, dark haired, dark eyed, had the most beautiful nose and mouth I had ever seen…and horrible acne scars on his face. I thought it made him more approachable, and his face, much more interesting. He became my first boyfriend, and my first love, and we dated for almost two years. The women in my family, grandma, aunts, sisters (2) and girl cousins (12) were a little put off at first... but every single one of them said, "Scott is not very attractive at first...but the more you get to know him, the cuter he gets." Duh..I could have told them THAT!!
My point is, that while your caller may think his scars are bad enough to turn SOME women off, he needs to consider those same scars may be the 'rugged' complexion that turn some women on. I was inexperienced when it came to boyfriends, yes… but I was not in the least bit ugly. His biggest complaint about dating me, he said, was that he heard way too many 'beauty and the beast' comments… until the time some drunk jerk at a frat party said it one too many times and they had to pull me off of him after blacking his eye and popping his nose. (No I wasn't drunk, just protective, madly in love and in possession of a very bad temper.)
Besides, if that's what your caller is hearing from the type of women he is trying to attract, he needs to rethink the type of women he's choosing as the possible mother of his 84 children. Just think of what their children will go through from a having a woman like that as a mother if his kids have the same complexion issues as he did.
The wife of another ruggedly complected man.
