Dad Has My Back

Our children are a 17 year old girl and two boys 15 and 13. They are usually good kids, and we are a loving family. However children want to find where the line is and cross it. I am 5'2 and pretty much a wimp physically (emotionally I am a mountain). So it was only a matter of time before all of my children were physically stronger that me.

I remember about two years ago, my older son and I were in the middle of some conflict, and I believe in picking my battles, because when I have chosen a battle, as a parent, I must win. So it was starting to get heated and he would not back down, he made a fist and started to raise it! I looked at him and said "I am done, go to your room, you can discuss this with dad."

When my husband got home I briefed him. He went to our son's room, got in his face and let him have it in no uncertain terms that, "Whatever you do to Mom, you do to me, you raise your fist to Mom, you are raising your fist to me, you raise your voice to Mom, you are raising your voice to me, she is the boss, you will listen to her".

My son later apologized and all was well. Occasionally my husband needs to have that conversation again with one boy or the other. My point is, as much as they love and respect me, sometimes they need that "alpha male" you so often talk about. I chose wisely and will treat kindly till the day I die!
