Refocused On What's Important

Dear Dr. Laura,

I am very excited about celebrating my 20th wedding anniversary with my husband this week. Because of you I have a wonderful new outlook on life. I listened to you when our children were young and stayed home with them for 10 years. Then I went back to work, not keeping with my children's hours in school. Life got busy and I found myself constantly on the go for the last ten years.

Here is the turning point for me. My husband gave me an ipod for Christmas last year. He signed me up for your pod casts and faithfully loads the pod casts onto my ipod for me on a regular basis. (You see I love technology, but don't want to understand it.) I began to listen to your advice, and realized that I was emotionally, physically and spiritually exhausted. I began wondering why I stopped listening to you. Coupled with my reintroduction to you, I had been in a very difficult work environment for most of this year. It became so bad that I resigned my position in late August. I am so happy to say that I have the support of my husband. You see my husband has also been listening to your pod casts. He had purchased your book on marriage for me years ago. While I am learning to live on a budget, I couldn't be happier!!

The stress from my job was taken home. Oh I was a kind parent, took care of all my children's needs, but I yelled a lot. My relationship with my children and husband was suffering. My children, 18 year old son and daughters 14 and 16 were not getting the best of me. I was attentive to my husband, but not fully enjoying our time together. I have truly enjoyed returning to the role of wife/girlfriend and mother. I have told my husband I may never go back to work full time AGAIN!

I just want to stress the importance of being around for your children, no matter what their age. I walked in the door one evening last week to hear my 16 year old daughter saying to her Dad, "Mom doesn't yell at me anymore!" I kept my composer, but did ask my husband later to confirm what our daughter had said. Those words were like music to my ears. We still battle with normal teen issues, but we are truly a better family than we have been in years. I want to close with giving credit to my husband for sleighing those dragons so that I can refocus my priorities. Thank you Dr. Laura for being a sound voice for families,

J.
