Bringing Me To My Senses

Dear Dr. Laura,

I turned 53 on Monday and spent the day cleaning up diarrhea from my sick, 10-year-old son who is profoundly deaf, developmentally delayed, and non-verbal. I was feeling sorry for myself because I didn't plan on having to clean up poop for this many years.

Today, I turned on the radio to catch the last portion of a call from a Mom who was in the process of feeding her baby. You were talking to her about choosing to be either angry or being pathetic, a choice to which I can relate.

What made me cry was when you asked the caller to reveal what was annoying about feeding her baby. She replied that instead of eating, he wanted to laugh and smile in response to hearing her voice. You said to her, "Isn't it amazing that you are more important than food to your baby?"

I burst into tears as I recalled how my son, sick with the flu and all, drew a picture of two stick figures, Mom and him. He drew hearts all around the figures and signed to me, "I love you." He then tipped his head, clutched his hands up by his face and said, "Ohhhh," like people do when they see something warm and touching. This and Mom is all he knows how to say.

I, too, have someone in awe of me, and I am ashamed that instead of cherishing this fact, I chose to feel sorry for myself having the privilege of caring for this wonderful human being who brings so much joy to my life.

Thanks for bringing me to my senses and thanks for all you do for families.

Fondly,

N.
My kids' mom and my husband's girlfriend
