My Ode to Dr. Laura

Dear Dr. Laura:

I have written quite a few times, as I simply love to write. More importantly, I love listening to you and I have been an avid listener for years. Each day, I try to write something conveying a positive message that you in some way have had something to do with. This is my tribute to you. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Dana

I have been able to overcome a physical challenge by managing with my deficits. It is what it is. I keep going. I don't go backwards to manipulate things to be the way I'd like them to be. Looking back with regret is wasting time. Time shouldn't be squandered, but savored.

Dr. Laura: "When we preserve hatred and hurt from the past, the present is ruined and the future is dismal if we're always living life through a rear view mirror."

We can't necessarily undo what has already run its course. We can take a detour to another path, but we cannot travel every road.

Dr. Laura: "In life there are many opportunities, but we should expect to sacrifice some things. We can't have everything and there are opportunities we miss. So what?"

Pessimists may think that each moment we live is another step closer to demise. The optimist merely cherishes life and enjoys the moments, the minutes, the hours, the weeks, months and the years. If we put no purpose or value in each day we're given, the sun rise, the change of seasons, or in change itself...what does life mean?

Dr. Laura: "We get hurt. It's normal. I can't fix what's normal. Feelings don't motivate logic. At some point we CHOOSE to be happy or sad."

Those who ignore or scoff at the ill behavior of others will likely be impaled by the same cruel words and harshness in return.

Dr. Laura: "If it hasn't happened to THEM yet, they must like being bitten by red ants or an alligator"

Being happy doesn't mean that we are always magically euphoric, because it will always take minimal effort, at best. I'm happy because I've gotten something out of life, regardless of how many weeds I have to pull out of a green pasture. Roses are still beautiful in spite of their thorns. Life is beautiful in all of its splendor and imperfection.

Dr Laura: "Bad things happen to good people. We can choose to be happy with what we have TODAY."

Chameleons may change their colors in each environment, but we don't know what their true colors are unless they are tested.

Dr. Laura: We never tend to behave in ways that aren't a true reflection of who we are.
