After 2000 Times, It Finally Sank In

Dr Laura,

I have been a fan since the first day I heard your show three years ago. I have learned a lot of lessons from you and from listeners over the years and a lot of situations that applied directly to me, but something that I have heard you say two thousand times (that I didn't think applied to me) finally hit me in the face tonight.

You had a little girl on the show that was focusing on the fact that her mom was not involved in her life and you told her to focus on what she has, not what she doesn't have. I never thought that applied to be because despite my bad childhood, I have a good life.

Then, it hit me, I don't covet things but I do try to find any possible negative idiosyncratic thing I did wrong that day, or in any given situation rather than giving myself a break to make mistakes like "normal" people do. I didn't think that I deserved to be given a break, I thought that I should do penance by thinking about worrying about what I did wrong rather that what I did right. And now I see that I deserve to be able to make mistakes.

Thank you for having the patience to repeat the idea enough times that it finally broke through my fat head.

A.
