THE Piece of Paper
Hi Dr. Laura,
I've listened to you off-and-on over the years. When I didn't listen, I was working and unable to have a radio, as I can on my present job.
First, I'd like to say that I have NEVER 'shacked' with a man because it went against my beliefs, yet, I was still 'thrown' when a woman would say, "You don't need a piece of paper to have a life with someone". I never bought into it but, didn't know what to say until I listened to one of your broadcasts in which a woman called to complain that her 'shack-up hunk' still kept in touch with his old girlfriends. She also stated they have two (2) children. Your response to her was since they were not married, he was free to do as he pleased. She became testy with you stating, "I don't need a piece of paper..." and you replied, "look, you are the 'shack-up' honey with two (2) illegitimate kids." I had to run to the bathroom in a hurry so I could let out the laughter, which lasted for fifteen (15) minutes. I was laughing to the point of tears when a co-worker came into the restroom and asked me if I was okay (with that "you're crazy" look all in fun).
Dr. Laura, I have been to weddings of many different faiths and ALL the vows have the same principals, "To love & cherish", "In sickness/health, wealth/poverty", and "Keeping only to each other". After the ceremony, the bride and groom, maid of honor and best man, and the minister sign the certificate (THE Piece of Paper) that bears witness that THESE PROMISES WERE MADE.
I don't care what a person says. The best agreement is one which is supported by a physical document whether business or personal. So, Ladies and Gentlemen without this "piece of paper", there is no PROOF any promises were made to you, therefore, you...have...no...rights!
Please don't waste time talking about celebrities who have protected their assets through attorneys, they can afford. Those of us who have average jobs, no matter how well paid, have other interests on which to spend our money than attorneys, each time we (general use) want to 'live-in.
Thank you, Dr. Laura for your constant upholding of what is moral.
J.
