Caller With The Mastectomy

I was very moved by your caller who had a mastectomy, lost all her hair & was embarrassed for her husband to see her body. Twenty-one years ago I had the same problem and never had reconstruction. My husband got me through a very difficult time. He was with me for every doctor visit, every chemo treatment & every bump in the road to my recovery (and there were many bumps) He was even with me for my 10 yr. visit, when the oncologist shook my hand and told me I didn't have to come back.

Never once did my husband make me feel like anything less than the girl he fell in love with. I say girl because from the ages of 14 ½ and 16 we were inseparable.

In 51 yrs. of marriage we had our ups and downs. BUT when I think of all he did for me, especially after I was diagnosed with cancer, the good, by far, outweighed the bad. Sadly, he passed away a little over 2 yrs. ago. I never left his side through his illness, as he stayed with me when I was ill. God had another plan for him, because I couldn't do for him what he did for me.

Tell your caller to cherish every moment with her loving husband. We never know what the future holds for us. I'm 71 years old (in my mind still in my 30's) and will miss those loving strong arms around me for the rest of my life.

Thanks for being there, Dr. Laura.

M.
