Freedom Ride with Dr. Laura
Hi, it's me! And this is my Harley trike, or I call it "the Road King with the training wheels," to make sure I don't fall down, which is a good plan. I had it designed by an artist so that it would show the American flag, plus, you know, the mystique of the Harley...the skulls. And there are loose eyeballs too but, you know, I can get a little strange with this.
Now, when I grew up through the 50s and 60s, there was all this mystique about the people who rode bikes and all of that, and biker gangs and all of this kind of ugly stuff. But I've come to find out that this is a community of terrific people. If you want to make sure that you're going to have a group of wonderful people, all of whom can get along with each other and are incredibly generous with charity, you go to the bikers. Because I've been in bike rides to raise money for charity with these people and they are just so generous, and they are modestly incomed.
And I also like the part where you're just outside. I mean when I'm riding, I can smell things, feel things...the temperature, the wind (not going through my hair, because I wear my helmet), but the wind on your face is just wonderful. It's very freeing, it's very exciting, it's very fun...until somebody cuts you off on the right, then it's not so much fun. But otherwise, it's just been a wonderful experience and my husband and I ride every weekend. We take trips somewhere and have lunch, have dinner.
The one thing you cannot do is have a cocktail because you do not want to have one micro-ounce of alcohol in your blood stream because you have to watch out, as I said, for the car drivers that get very annoyed that you're there. It's hot, it's cool, it's fun and I must have a dozen of these Harley jackets. What can I tell you?
And the red, white and blue? Well, it's all part of my feeling about the freedom we have on the road -- sort of matches the freedom we have in this country to do whatever we'd like. I can do this without a burka; think about that.
