Take a Tour of Doc's Studio

I just finished doing the radio program. This is the point at which, if there are promos to do for radio stations I do that…you know, “This is Dr. Laura, listen to me at 3 pm or something horrible will happen to you”, you know, those kinds of things. And this is what it looks like. [Motions to her desk] These are all my things. This is the “hotline” [pulls over a red phone] it rings red…actually, it doesn’t ring, it blinks red and that means there’s some horrible thing happening and they have to reach me and tell me that some piece of equipment collapsed or there’s something I have to do, or whatever. And this is my regular computer [motions to laptop on the left], and this is the show computer [motions to larger laptop on the right] so Kimberly and I communicate through this computer so she’ll put the person’s name, the state perhaps they’re coming from, and three words, you know, “They’re talking about a hangnail”. That’s probably not going to be one of the calls that gets on the air, but that’s the thing…and which line is twinkling, and that’s fun.

The pink tennis ball is here [picks up the pink tennis ball off of the desk] because I like pink, even when I’m playing tennis. I have the timer [motions to a clock-like timer], stapler, right here there are a million file folders [motions to the organized files beside the desk] so I am multi-tasking all the time. And the only reason this table is neat is because I knew we were going to film this today, so I spent an hour on the weekend finally putting everything in the correct folder. Uh, that’s about it for here.

And if you [talking to the cameraman] will just flip around, that’s a…we’ve got a fireplace here, that when it gets cold in the winter, I put on. I’ve got a big screen TV that I absolutely never use. But here I have…these are so old. [Motions to Star Trek figurines on fireplace mantle] These are from, probably 1963, when the original Star Trek was on. I’m a very, very, very, VERY big Trekkie. In a room where I do exercising, I have wall-to-wall Star Trek stuff. I liked the personal relationships between everybody in the original one and that’s probably why I’m the most fond. Also, especially for the first two years, there were a lot of philosophical points that were made; it wasn’t just “science fictiony,” but there were points to be made. And I often use those on the air and in my one woman shows and what have you.

And military stuff [shows items displayed on the left side of mantle, patriotic items] because my kid’s in the military. And people always send me little stuffed animals and things [shows a little teddy bear]. And this is Mr. Cat from one of my children’s books [holds up an orange striped cat stuffed animal]. I don’t know how many of these exist in the universe but I made sure to cop one. [points at a framed license plate that reads “DR LAURA”] That actually was on my car at one point until I realized that, security wise, it’s probably not that smart to have your car easily identified.

And this was one of the first Dr. Laura dolls [motions to the Dr. Laura action figure doll] you know, you press her belly button [doll says “please, don’t argue with me. It makes me testy.” in Dr. Laura’s recorded voice]. [Laughs] Yeah, I did say that.

Okay, and here we have bookshelves galore and I like to collect photographs of everything. So there are a million photographs all over house, but here I have [picks up a photo frame]…I was very proud when I actually got myself into that yoga position [picture shows her in a tough yoga pose] maybe I’ll do that on one of our little YouTube blogs.

And me on a Harley [shows photo with her on her Harley motorcycle] of course I have Harley stuff and Harley cups. And up here [on the bookshelves] I have numerous awards that I’ve gotten, Marconi and all kinds of things, and sailing, racing…

This [shows photo] I am extremely proud of. The local zoo wanted to raise money and they asked celebrities in the area if we would get a bird house and design it somehow. So there were three shapes of bird houses, I picked this one [motions to the picture of a cylindrical-shaped bird house with pointy roof, painted red, white and blue] and made it military. So we have the red, white and blue and you see [motions to the drawings on the bird house] I have the little green soldiers, protecting the openings. [Laughs] And that’s a toothpick with the American flag on the top of it. I had to take a picture of this. I had no idea how to do this so I went to one of the craft shops and said, “I have no idea.” So you have to treat the wood first and prime it, and then paint it, and then paint it again and then try not to get red on the blue, on the white…and by the time I was finished with it, I wanted to make about 50 more but nobody wanted them. So it sold and made money for the zoo, and I’m very happy about that.

Um, I read a lot and…novels and psych stuff and what have you. And, well, that’s pretty much my office. And I have a good time here, talking to all of you folks for three hours a day. And I’m glad you can see my sanctuary, and where I’m comfortable. And where I get to nag you from.

So, until next time, do the right thing.
