Wearing Only Dirty T-shirts and Shorts
Hi, I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger and welcome to this week's YouTube channel extravaganza. And our question today is from Diane:
My husband and I have been retired for about several years. [I cannot understand the concept, but I'd fill the time in somehow.] From the time we retired, his dress has deteriorated to the point that he will now go any place in a dirty t-shirt (without a collar) and dirty shorts. I try to hide them and wash them but he gets angry if I do.
When I am out with him it is very embarrassing because he looks like he is about to paint the house or change the oil on the car. [Well since he's retired, you could actually have him do those things (laughs).] When I mention that I would appreciate him putting on clean clothes and a nice shirt, he gets upset. Is there a nice way to get him to dress like the handsome man he is so I can be proud to be with him?
Well I wonder what's going on...but when somebody's dress deteriorates, I look at two things: they're on drugs or they're having a mental disorder. It could be anything from depression, because he is retired and feels like a fish out of water, or the marriage is now right in his face, whereas when he had work to do, it kind of got distilled out a little bit. I don't know. Truthfully, there is a serious problem and it is very likely that he has a mental illness. And so a psychiatric assessment would be valuable at this point, because presenting oneself in that way is either a hostile act or an act of just hurt, depression and out of it. So get him some care.
I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger. See you next time.
