Is This Too Much Eyeliner?
Hi, I'm Dr. Laura and welcome to my YouTube channel, where you get to ask questions and you get to listen to me harangue you and you don't have to hang up on me.
From Cindy:
I am a freshman in high school and I'm at the age where I want to be my own person and express myself and set trends, but my mom keeps on telling me how I should do my make up and basically telling me I'm doing it the wrong way. I want to be me, not what my mom thinks is me. I want to try glittery eye shadow and get compliments and explore different styles. I want to be the one responsible if I go to school looking horrible one day. [(Laughs) I like that attitude.] That's how you learn, right? I'm not asking to outline my eyes with an inch of black liner or anything, I just want to be allowed to explore and express myself with my makeup. Am I being unreasonable?
As far as going to school, that's unreasonable. I think the school and your mother should draw the line as to what you can do to your face and your clothes and how you present yourself in an academic environment, which is supposed to be serious. And I know all you girls are competing, but I frankly don't care. You're supposed to be there to get an education.
Now, you could make some kind of deal with your mom: "Mom, when I go to school you decide how the makeup looks. Weekends, let me go crazy. What do you think? I'll even do yours, Mom. We'll do our makeup together." Maybe your mom would have some fun with you putting the glittery stuff on her eyelids. So make it a team thing and make it a compromise, and you'll see how much give-and-take makes a relationship work.
I'm Dr. Laura...by the way, is this too much liner? [Points to her eyeliner on her eyelids] I don't think so. I'm Dr. Laura Schlessinger...it's not normally what I wear on radio, which is [whispers] none. Welcome and see you next time.
