Book Description
“I decided to write this book because I believe it is our responsibility
to recognize and confront evil in the world—
and because I’m convinced that if we fail in that mission, it will lead us to disaster.”
–Sean Hannity
Sean Hannity’s first book, the New York Times bestseller LET FREEDOM RING, cemented his place as the freshest and most compelling conservative voice in the country. As the host of the number one debate show on television, Hannity & Colmes and The Sean Hannity Show, Hannity has a wildly devoted fan base. Now he brings his plainspoken, take-no-prisoners style to the continuing War on Terror abroad—and liberalism at home—in DELIVER US FROM EVIL: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism.
Three years ago, Hannity writes, evil surfaced in the Western world, and America was forced to confront “pure human wickedness” in a way we had not in generations. Evil exists—“it is real, and it means to harm us,” no matter what the political left would have us believe. Hannity looks at how liberals dismiss the idea of evil by rejecting the absolute standards of right and wrong and treating the concept of sin as primitively biblical. As he demonstrates, in their willingness to treat Saddam and Osama not as morally depraved murderers, but as men driven to their acts by the injustices of Western society, the voices of liberalism appear content to tolerate evil—allowing it to grow and fester.
In Sean Hannity’s view, the primary evil we face today is terrorism, and the greatest threat to the War on Terror is political liberalism. As he demonstrates, liberals underestimate the terrorist threat, ignoring the risks of appeasement rather than confront the regimes that aid and abet the terrorists. In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, Hannity revisits the harsh lessons America has learned in confronting evil in the past and the present, to illuminate the course we must take in the future. He traces a direct line from Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin through Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden.
Hannity examines the purest form of evil ever known—Nazism—and how the lessons we learned then are just as important today. By taking on the Nazis, we were compelled by three basic principles—that totalitarian government is the enemy of freedom; that the systematic oppression and cruelty it fosters is not merely senseless, but utterly evil; and that appeasement can never defeat evil—it can only embolden it. The horrors of the Holocaust demand that we never forget history, Hannity argues, and we owe it to those who died, and to our own children, to remain vigilant in the war against evil.
As Hannity reminds us, we need only look to Ronald Reagan’s fight against communism to be reminded how the determination of one man was able to prevail over an evil empire. It was Reagan’s grasp of the threat of Marxist totalitarianism that compelled him to challenge the Soviet regime, inspiring dissidents behind the Iron Curtain and shaming Soviet leaders into abandoning their faltering communist state. “If we’re to conquer liberal defeatism at home and win the War on Terror, we must first look back and take inspiration from Reagan’s example. He proved that the vision of one strong leader could topple a totalitarian regime half a world away.”
Reagan, like George W. Bush, was also driven by faith. While liberals mock conservatives for their willingness to speak openly about matters of faith, Hannity believes that “the day a president can not invoke God as his guiding light, and the source from who he and our nation derive strength and direction, is the day America ceases to be great.”
And as the presidential election of 2004 nears, Hannity contends that we must choose a leader who possesses the moral vision to recognize, and confront, evil. The 2004 election will be the first chance America has to elect a president since the events of September 11, 2001. With the economy on the rebound, the major issue in the election will be the War on Terror—and Hannity firmly believes the American people will reelect George W. Bush. “Electing a Democrat in 2004 would constitute a rejection of the clear moral leadership the president has displayed since taking office. It would also mean endorsing a political party that’s assembled one of the most irresponsible sets of presidential candidates since Jimmy Carter, Teddy Kennedy, and Jerry Brown duked it out for the Democratic nomination in 1980. I don’t think the American people are going to let that happen.”
Hannity believes we are witnessing an almost unprecedented phenomenon in American history—an entire political party coming unhinged. He describes how the field of Democratic candidates is united by one thing alone—their hatred of George W. Bush—and how this vitriolic hatred threatens to ruin the party. And he has harsh words for the leading contenders for the Democratic nomination including:
Howard Dean. A hardcore liberal who not only doesn’t hide his contempt for President Bush—he thrives on it. “As his political records reveals, if Howard Dean were elected president, the national security interests of our nation would be immediately and seriously jeopardized.”
John Kerry. A senator who is constantly shifting positions, waffling and flip-flopping on the tough questions of the day. “He has proven to be guided not by a strong moral compass, but by the shifting sands of pure political opportunism.”
Joseph Lieberman. A man with a strong moral compass, but fatally misguided when it comes to foreign policy. “If Senator Lieberman were elected president, his stated position—that he would insist on U.N. approval before engaging our forces abroad—would cause certain harm to our national interest.”
Wesley Clark. A so-called military hero with an extremely checkered history in high positions of responsibility. “This man is not fit to lead his country, at war or at home.”
In the end, Hannity concludes that the only man for the job is George W. Bush. With his trademark blend of passion and hard-hitting commentary, he urges Americans to recognize the dangers of putting our faith in toothless “multilateralism” when the times call for decisive action. For only through strong defense of our freedoms, at home and around the world, can we preserve America’s security and liberty in the dangerous twenty–first century.
