Book Description
Are men and women really that different? According to Dr. Steven E. Rhoads, who spent 10 years researching this question, the answer is a definitive yes. In his brand new book, Taking Sex Differences Seriously, Professor Rhoads explains that sex differences between men and women are hardwired and no matter how much men and women fight to be equal they never really will be, at least not in the biological sense.
Steven Rhoads gives a multitude of examples as to why men and women are innately different and how instinct and nature can not be denied or ignored. One meaningful example in Taking Sex Difference Seriously is how women instinctively hold babies on their left-side. This brings the baby closer to the heartbeat and thus creates a more womb-like environment. It is clear from Rhoads’ research that men are naturally more competitive and aggressive and hence they generally are more into sports and climbing corporate ladders. This kinetic behavior of men helps alleviate energy in a healthy and natural way. Dr. Rhoads may be controversial but his well-researched and factual book can not be disputed. He argues that this should not be a contentious debate rather it should ease the expectations people have for themselves and the opposite sex and help men and women relax into the roles nature has given us.
By no means does Professor Rhoads give hall passes to men to sleep around because that is “in their nature” or for women to not work outside the home because caring and nurturing are “in their nature” (although he is a big proponent of parental care instead of day care); instead he strongly believes that some social restraints on natural behavior are important and necessary to keep a morally intact society. Nor does he profess that men and women are different in the intellectual sense. Yes, they think differently but that does not mean one sex has a higher intelligence than another. What he does encourage, however, is for people to pay attention to and accept that men and women are indeed different. This belief should help create a more harmonious and understanding relationship between the sexes.
A Few Interesting Facts from the Book:
- For men more than for women good and frequent sex is associated with marital happiness
- Fathers are more attached to their children if their wives work less outside the home.
- Only about one-sixth of cohabiting relationships last as long as three years.
- Females are superior to males in reading emotions, responding to social cues and cultivating intimate relationships.
