Email of the Day: Another Woman Comforted My Daughter

Written by Dr. Laura | 9/2/21 8:15 AM

I was one of those moms who thought I could work and my daughter would be fine. I told myself she was having fun playing with the other children when I picked her up 3 hours after school was over. She really loved Mrs. “C” who looked after her once school was over, and Mrs. “C” loved her. Every time I felt guilty about not being there, I told myself she was fine.

One day I came home and Mrs. “C” met me at the door. My fourth-grade daughter told one of her friends that she really liked one of the boys on the school bus. She also said it was a secret. Of course, the other girl did not keep the secret and told the boy. My daughter ran to Mrs. “C” to tell her how embarrassed and hurt she was when the other kids on the bus started to tease her. Mrs. “C” helped my child calm herself, and told her if she wanted to keep a secret, she had to keep it to herself. Yes, Mrs. “C” comforted my daughter during an after-school drama. Mom wasn’t there. Mom was at work. When I asked my daughter if she wanted to talk about what happened, she said “No, I talked to Mrs. ‘C’ and now I’m okay.”

I quit my part-time job the next day. As my daughter grew, I picked her up at school and was the first person she told about her day. Now I could truthfully say “she will be fine,” and she was. She’s a senior in college and sometimes still likes to tell me when something happens at school!
