Email of the Day: Being Family Doesn’t Give You the Right to Abuse

Email of the Day: Being Family Doesn’t Give You the Right to Abuse

Not long ago, I saw a post on your Facebook page about sitting in your car an extra five minutes after you park. Twenty years ago, I would come home from work and sit in the car after I parked. I needed the extra time to deal with my fears. I had to leave my husband and my toxic family behind.

You said that being family doesn’t give anyone the right to mistreat you, and by leaving and cutting off ties, I hope I taught them that. Some didn’t speak to me after I cut them out of my life, but I knew that was okay. Eventually, we worked things out so we could be agreeable to each other, but I will always abide by the limits I set, and they know that. I’d rather be alone than live a fake unhappy existence.

I always wanted to thank you, but when I saw that post, I knew I should write. You have greatly affected my life and helped me to understand that any form of abuse by a loved one isn’t normal and should not be tolerated.
