My 13-year-old son and I were driving home when he asked me โMom, if you called into the Dr. Laura show, what would you ask her?โ I immediately responded that I would call to thank you. โFor what?โ he asked. I told him that I listened to you with my mother (his grandmother) when I was young while we would drive long distances together. My mother was an avid listener and I truly believe she received most of her parenting skills from listening to your advice to your callers.
Back then, I would not have thanked you for helping her get the advice she needed to raise an โout of controlโ young teenage daughter, as I didnโt like all the rules and I thought my mom was so mean! But now, as a 47-year-old mother of two teenage boys, your advice has helped me tremendously. Iโm sure if you asked MY kids, they would tell you they wished I didnโt listen to your program so much, which I take to mean I am โdoing the right thingโ with them.
My mother is in an advanced stage of Alzheimerโs disease. Since I canโt thank her these days, Iโd like to say thank you to YOU for the advice and guidance you give to all your listeners who are parents. Children do not come with an instruction manual, but thankfully you are here to give the sound advice that we can all use and apply to our own lives.
