After hearing you ask callers, “Between now and dead, how do you want to live your life?” I started asking myself the same thing two months ago. I began the next chapter of my life after my husband’s passing in May. So, while sitting outside on a sunny Sunday, I pondered what would come next for me.
I knew I wanted to continue agility training with my dog Cricket and learn how to play the ukulele, but I really missed flying. My husband was a Captain for American Airlines, and I also had my pilot’s license. I checked out the local airport and found planes similar to those I had flown. At my age, I’ll never fly solo again. But I intend to fly twice a month with a check pilot. It will be a joy to get back in the air since it meant so much to my husband and me. On the last day that he was responsive, I told him he was the smartest pilot I ever knew. His eyes popped open in surprise, and he puckered his lips for a kiss. That was the last time he responded to me.
Your advice about grief has been very helpful. You've reassured me that what I’m feeling is NORMAL. I know I’ll go through waves of grief, but I accept it as a necessary part of loving someone. My husband and I had only been together for 17 years, but we were able to fit in 50 years of experiences! Thank you for everything you do for people.
