Email of the Day: Getting Sober Helped Save My Marriage

Written by Dr. Laura | 7/12/22 8:15 AM

My wife and I have been married for thirteen years, and we have a nine-year-old daughter. Two years ago, I started an inappropriate relationship with a former co-worker. The relationship was emotional, but never physical. I turned to her at a time that my marriage was not in a good place and leaned on her for good company and conversation.

Last year, my wife found out about it, and I was ready to leave the marriage. At that time, my wife and I both had a problem with alcohol, and that had a major impact on our decision-making. While we both contributed to our problems, we understood that we were at a crossroads.

We decided to stop drinking completely, seek counseling, and start treating each other the way we used to when we first fell in love. One of the hardest things I’ve ever done was getting sober. I had to deal with life in a different way, and since we both never really knew each other completely sober, we had to discover one another again. I fell in love with my wife all over again in a way I never thought I could. Our marriage is now strong enough to work through this. Divorce is not an option anymore. From now until dead, I am exactly where I want to be!
