Email of the Day: How I De-escalate a Toddler Tantrum

I recently heard you give some great advice to a mom of two toddlers who were “pecking” at her. You suggested that when that happened, turn on a fun song and just start dancing.

I have a two-year-old boy and a six-month-old girl. My boy woke up from his nap particularly grumpy, and when I could sense a tantrum brewing, I took your advice. I turned on the song “Who Let the Dogs Out” by Baja Men as loud as we could take it and started dancing.

It took about three seconds before my boy’s frown broke into a huge smile and he started to dance too. For the entire song, both of us were dancing and laughing, and even my baby girl (who was in my arms) couldn’t help but crack up at us.

Thanks for the simple, yet effective, advice. It helped me turn a potentially “icky” moment into a fun one with my kids. I’m definitely putting this one in my “Mom Manual!”
