I was forced to eat a sandwich with mayo on it when I was 7 years old. As an adult, I still gag at the thought and can’t eat mayo on a sandwich. My approach with my three sons may not have been honest, but it worked.
When I presented a new vegetable to them, I declared that this was a special dish that I made just for their father and me, and they couldn’t have any. The second time I presented the vegetable, I allowed them to have just a taste of it, because it was still just for their father and me. There wasn’t a vegetable or any other food they wouldn’t eat when I used this approach first. I never had to coax them to eat.
My boys are all good cooks now and my grandkids aren’t picky eaters either. I’ve heard people talk about this problem forever, but I’ve never heard of anyone using my technique.
