Email of the Day: How I Learned to Be a Good Husband and Dad

Written by Dr. Laura | 11/30/21 9:15 AM

I started listening to you when I was in my twenties. I wasn’t married yet and had no kids. I was just working and going to school. I eventually married (going on 26 years) and raised three girls. Two of them live on their own, and are paying their own way through life. I can afford to pay, but what values would I be teaching them? They are all highly ethical, hard-working young women. No snowflakes here! No failure to launch!

My wife (their mom) raised and supported them from birth to today. Any time of the day or night she and I are available, but she understands hard work, values and ethics. She has no fancy degree, but to me, she could teach at any level how to be a great mom. All of our girls are strong, family-oriented young women, and they talk about staying home and teaching their kids the same way their mom did for them.

Through listening to you, I learned early that if I married a woman with the same mindset and value system as me, we would be successful in the most important component of life. I’m hoping my headstone when I pass on says “Great father and husband; mentored and supported. Had the support of a loving wife who together raised their children to be outstanding and contributing members of society.”
