Email of the Day: How I Turned My Husband’s Bad Day into a Good One

My husband called me on his way home from work one day and said he had had a bad day and that all he wanted to do was come home, sit outside and have a drink. I was also on my way home from work and arrived 45 minutes before him. In those 45 minutes, I made him a batch of his favorite cookies, started dinner, lit some candles in the bedroom, and prepared a bubble bath for myself (which is my clue to him that I am “in the mood”).

While I was soaking in the tub, I heard him open the door and give out a chuckle. From the bath, I said “Hello,” and the rest of the evening was perfect. Two days later, a caller to your show said her husband was critical of her and everything she did. You suggested that she had the power to change his mood, and that sex was a powerful tool to do that. You also told her that this doesn’t work on women – it usually has the opposite effect. When I heard that call, I asked my husband if I had handled our situation correctly. He smiled and said “It was the perfect solution!” And, he added, “Dr. Laura is right that sex does work on men and she’s also correct that this solution has the opposite effect on women.”

We’ve been married for 21 years, and we are having more fun now that the kids have flown the nest!
