Email of the Day: I Blamed My Husband for Everything

Written by Dr. Laura | 2/17/21 9:15 AM

My husband and I have been married for 15 years. I’m sorry to say it took that long for me to treat him with sincere affection, appreciation and approval. Before I read “The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands,” I blamed him for everything! Living in a rental? His fault. Not going on vacations? His fault. Cooking dinner after a long day of homeschooling and working at my part-time job? His fault.

And so, I withheld hugs and kisses from him when he’d come home from a high-pressure, stressful, 12-hour work day. I withheld sex from him because, in harsh honesty, I felt he didn’t deserve it. And as if the criticism he faced at work wasn’t enough, I criticized him for what I perceived to be a lack of help in our home. I remember him looking at me with defeat in his eyes and confessing “I don’t think I can make you happy.”

Reading your book has profoundly changed my paradigm in how I love and treat my husband. Now I don’t just say I appreciate him; I back it up with action! I embrace him when he comes home, I cook more, so the first thing he smells when he walks through the door is that homecookin’ aroma. I praise his efforts and I point out his noble qualities. I now give him the consideration that I would have formerly only given to guests in our home. The only difference is that I have sex with him!!
