Email of the Day: I Didn’t Know How To Be A Good Wife

Written by Dr. Laura | 3/23/21 8:15 AM

I was raised by a single mother who had four children and a horrible outlook on men, so I never had an example of how to treat a husband properly. I overcame this dysfunction and married an amazing man. We’re both in our twenties with no children, so we’re focused on our careers. Two years ago, I began a new job, with the understanding that there would be some travel. However, my first day I was blindsided when they sent me to work across the country for over a week to a city I’d never been in before.

When I returned, I was stressed out, grumpy, and started to bitch about everything when my husband picked me up at the airport. When we got home, I was surprised to enter a spotless house. The dishes were done, the bed was made, and the laundry was folded and put away. My husband had also picked up ingredients to make a homemade pizza and uncorked our favorite wine. I immediately thought of your wisdom about treating kindly. I gave him a big hug and apologized for being nasty.

We spent a wonderful evening together, and it was exactly what I needed. Men who are happy go above and beyond to make their wives happy. Thank you for teaching me how to be a good wife. Any woman can become a wife, but far too few know how to be a good one. I’m my husband’s girlfriend and he is more than my boyfriend. He’s my love, every day, and I make sure he knows it.
