Whenever I had free time or money, I would run off to a Broadway show or plan an exotic vacation. And then COVID happened. Having spent almost three months in an ICU 25 years ago due to a hemorrhage and after months of the pandemic lockdown, I felt trapped once again. Not wanting to waste any more precious time, I thought about how I could bring back adventure and joy to my life.
That’s when I got the idea to visit all the places I used to pass by and think “One day, when I’m not so busy, I will go there.” I began with all the outdoor places within a two- hour drive from my home. I packed a lunch, filled up my tank and headed off excited and prepared to see a new place and have a unique experience. I went to many gardens, castles, zoos and parks, and museums when they reopened. It was fun to go to these new and interesting sites, but I also enjoyed researching and finding new places to go. Many of these attractions were free or with admission fees always under twenty-five dollars.
I won’t say COVID was a blessing, but the pandemic made me much more appreciative of the many wonders so close to home. I hope this inspires other listeners to find some beauty nearby during this difficult time.
