Email of the Day: I Learned the Hard Way Who Was a True Friend

Written by Dr. Laura | 6/28/22 8:15 AM

I had four “friends” who systematically watched me struggle with an unexplained health issue for four years. I went from a healthy, active person to being unable to walk, and needing to use a wheelchair, despite many doctor visits, several misdiagnoses and numerous attempts of my own to get better. Their lack of concern was startling.

Just when I thought all hope was lost, the problem was finally discovered, but it was not going to be an easy fix. Because I needed all my strength to face the daunting task of recovery, I started dumping these “friends,” and relieved myself of the pressure their callous and self-absorbed behavior caused. I couldn’t believe how much better I felt!

However, I had a guardian angel of a friend who stood by me through all this. Without her, I probably wouldn’t be here today. Her selfless help saved me many times. She made me laugh, held my hand when I cried, and kicked me in the rear when I needed it (which happened a lot). While on the road to full recovery, I realized I had no regrets. It’s true what they say – when a crisis happens, real friends are walking IN the door, while all the others are walking OUT.
