Email of the Day: I Never Took My Husband For Granted

My mom gave me the same advice you give women about being a wife. She said being a wife and mother was an art form, telling me to pick my battles wisely, because if I nagged my husband over silly little things, he wouldn’t hear me when it was really something important.

Because of that good advice, I was my husband’s girlfriend until his death at age 41. Our daughters were only 11 and 13 when he died of cancer. Before, when he came home from work, I’d hug him and whisper in his ear “I’m not wearing a bra.” I also sent sexy cards to his office, marked “Personal.” I loved flirting with him, and I always wanted to make sure he looked forward to coming home to me. When he died, I had the peace of knowing no one could have loved him better or made him happier. When your spouse is gone, all you have are memories, and, hopefully, that peace that you loved them well.

I never took for granted one day of our sixteen years together. He was a kind, unselfish, honorable man who lived out his faith with generosity to everyone. And he was a darn good kisser! Our daughters married men very much like him. I have a wonderful family and four precious grandchildren as our legacy. Please keep telling women that they hold the power to a happy and fulfilling marriage.
