I’m 43 now, but when I was 20, I discovered my mother’s online emotional affair. I was close with both my mom and my dad, and was at a loss what to do. My boyfriend (now husband of 22 years) advised me that I should let my dad know that my mom was having an emotional affair and planning to leave him. My brother and sister were both college-aged, but I did just that.
It was a difficult time, but my parents are still married, and I think that incident allowed them both to see the cracks in their marriage and to mend what was broken. My mom worked to repair the damage she had done, she apologized to us and my dad, and owned her errors. She suffered enormously with guilt for a while over having put me and my siblings in that position. I can truly say, however, that now, it’s something I rarely think about. Her choice to take ownership of her wrongdoing and to earn back trust over time made a huge impact on how we felt towards her. I now see her as an honorable woman.
