Email of the Day: I Treated My Husband As a Sibling

Written by Dr. Laura | 9/15/20 8:15 AM

My father passed away when I was an infant, and my mom was left with eight children to raise, all under the age of nine!  Somehow, she managed, and growing up, I always felt safe and loved.  Our home was the gathering place for our friends, and she stayed home so she could keep an eye on us!  All of us married, are still with the same spouses, and we all still get along and see each other when we can.

When I got married, it was a struggle at first, as my husband came from happy and loving parents, and although my family was happy, there was no dad to teach me how to treat a man like a man.  Consequently, I treated my husband like a sibling.  At one point, we argued so much that I went home to my mom.  She told me that it wasn’t my home anymore; that my home was with my husband and that I made a commitment to my marriage.  She sent me back with the message to “work it out.”  I was surprised, sad and scared, but I know now that was the best advice she could have given me.  We DID work it out and have now been married for 36 years.  My husband is wonderful, and we are still crazy about each other.  But I have to thank YOU for teaching me how to be my husband’s girlfriend and not just his sister, and that intimacy is how a man feels love from his woman.  A hot meal and lots of compliments also go a long way!   A good man is very easy to keep happy if you know what to do.   Thanks for helping me to be a loving, caring, proud wife, mother, grandmother and mother-in-law.
