Email of the Day: I’m Enjoying My Teenage Kids

Written by Dr. Laura | 2/13/23 9:15 AM

When I pick up my 15-year-old son from school, as I have done since he was little, I say “Hi, sweetheart. Give me your paw.” And he gives me his hand, and I give it a squeeze and ask him about day. My six-foot-tall hockey-playing tough man-baby is still sweet to his mama!

Everyone always says “Wait until they’re teenagers.” Yes, there are a lot of challenges, but as the mom of a 15- and 17-year-old, I am astounded by how much I am enjoying this phase. I feel really connected to my kids and they are generally just really good people. I don’t just love them – I like them! Thanks to you, I’m tough. I have rules. I’m a party pooper when I need to be. I have expectations. But I always do things with a sense of humor, warmth, a smile and a hug. Even when they’re mad. I do my job, but I do it with love, and they know it.

The other reason why these years are going so well? I’ve been a stay-at-home mom. Even now. My home runs like a happy, well-oiled machine. My kids come home to a non-stressed mother who can help with homework and talk to them. They even come home sometimes to the smell of fresh baked cookies. I haven’t wasted a thing staying home with them. They still need their mom. I had only one shot at this, and you’ve helped me get it mostly right. Thanks, Dr. Laura, from me, my kids and my husband.
