I read your recent Email of the Day about a mom trying to decide whether to move her son forward a school year or have him repeat a grade. This story hit home with me because my parents had to face the same decision. I was in second grade at the time and had a speech and reading delay. Although I had already spent three years with my peers, my parents decided to hold me back. It was the best thing they could have done for me.
Yes, repeating a grade was embarrassing at the time. But that soon passed, and I was surrounded by kids I felt equal to. Thinking back, I can see how it boosted my confidence and morale. I was able to feel proud instead of like I was being looked down on by my classmates. I went on to achieve honors in high school and have since become a successful entrepreneur.
I have thanked my parents for making the right decision, as hard as it might have been. In my heart, I truly believe that if I had continued through school the way I started, my story would be completely different.
