Email of the Day: I’m Happier Since I Stopped Being a Perfectionist

Written by Dr. Laura | 3/28/22 8:15 AM

I am a silk painter and recovering art perfectionist. Trying to make the perfect painting for most of my life kept me from creating anything at all. The fear of getting so far into a painting and making a mistake that would make it “ugly” and having to throw it out kept me from doing what I truly love.

I began silk painting, which is a type of art that is challenging and full of happy mistakes. By doing this form of art, I learned some really important life lessons:

1. I’ve had to learn how to make my mistakes work for me instead of against me.

2. Most people don’t even see the things I consider mistakes, and

3. I won’t stop or quit because of the mistake. I just accept it and move on.

I am still learning and making mistakes every day, and I am better for it!
