I recently received a request from the prestigious all-girls Catholic high school from which I graduated to contribute to their alma mater directory. Most of the women I graduated with went on to have successful careers after college. I got a B.A. in journalism and then a teaching credential. When I spoke to one of the women putting together the directory, I was asked if I had a title or job position I wanted to include. I thought for a minute and then said “homemaker.” She chuckled and asked if I really wanted to put that down. I said, “Yes.” She sighed, said, “Okay,” and ended the call.
I’m raising three children who never spent a day in daycare. I didn’t work outside the home until they were in school and only when they were there. I prepare home-cooked dinners and I work hard to make sure my home is run smoothly and peacefully. My first priorities are my husband, children, and home.
Thank you, Dr. Laura, for validating what we homemakers do. Because of your constant defense and uplifting of the unsung and often belittled heroines of our culture, I was able to say with pride and confidence “I am a homemaker.”
