Email of the Day: Lies We Tell Ourselves Often Become the Truth

Written by Dr. Laura | 11/14/23 9:15 AM

My supervisor’s wife had a baby, and when she stopped by the office, she mentioned how much she was dreading going back to work. They don’t believe they can “afford” for her to stay home. She did go back, and on her first day, on her social media page, she was getting encouragement from all her friends and family, telling her she was doing the right thing, how it would get better with time, and how it would make those few hours she got to see her daughter that much more special! Those comments sickened me. Why on earth would anyone encourage a mother to leave her two-month-old with strangers for over eight hours a day?

I talked this over with my husband, and said I thought the reason she was upset was because she knew it was the wrong thing to do. And all her “friends” who told her it gets better with time is like the expression “tell a lie often enough and it becomes truth.” The longer women tell themselves that working is what’s BEST for their child, rather than sacrificing frivolous expenses, a lifestyle or a career because they brought a human into the world, the easier the lie becomes the truth. Children are NOT accessories to your life! I’m glad I have a husband who wholeheartedly agrees.
