Many years ago, I went to my 13-year-old daughterβs school to pick her up. While I was in the office waiting for her, her phys ed teacher recognized me and said βYou know how teachers bust at the seams to tell a parent when their child does something wrong? Well, Iβm going to tell you what your kid did right today.β
He told me the kids were doing some kind of required run, and my daughter, who was the fastest girl at school, completed it in record time. Afterward, she sat down near the teacher and asked βCan I go run with Catherine?β Catherine had a learning disability and was a little physically challenged. The teacher said βYouβve already finished your race,β to which my daughter responded, βI know, but I want to go run with her anyway.β So, he told her to go ahead and sat back to watch. My daughter ran up to Catherine and started talking to and encouraging her, saying things like βyou got this,β βyou can do it,β βweβre almost there,β and βIβm so proud of you.β Her teacher said Catherine not only finished the run, but beat her old time.
I sat there with tears flowing, and he told me that had my daughter not done this, Catherine would have given up and quit. I was so proud of the person of character my daughter was becoming. He said, βyou are doing something right at home, and I will never forget that I got the honor of watching what I saw.β
