I was on baby number four, and usually the baby arrived within a few hours after contractions started. This time, my water broke on the way to the hospital, my contractions were only two minutes apart, and I could feel the baby was ready to come out. The hospital doors were locked when we arrived at 10PM and no one came when we buzzed, so my husband pried the door open and carried me to a wheelchair. A nurse rolled me to the back and started asking all kinds of “check-in” questions, even though I said I was ready to have the baby right now!
My husband lifted me from the wheelchair onto the bed and whipped off my jeans. The nurses were shocked because my son’s head was emerging, and one nurse said “I’m not wearing gloves!” My husband looked at me and said “You can do this. Push!” Out our son came into his Daddy’s hands as the nursing staff stood by, dumbfounded. A doctor walked in just as my husband delivered our son and said “That’s the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!” My husband became hospital legend as staff came by to meet the dad who delivered his own son.
I’ll never forget how my husband rescued me that night. That experience exemplified who my husband is and how much he treasures me. Our son is healthy at three years old and adores his Daddy too.
