I’ve been married for 37 years. We’ve been through cancer, the loss of parents, sick family members, disability, loss of jobs, and mystery illnesses that would challenge even the most patient person. My husband’s gentleness, kindness and patience and just the way he treats people makes me love him more every day.
During our courtship, I watched how he treated his mother and his sister and I knew that’s how he’d be treating me in 20 years. At the beginning of our marriage, we decided divorce just wasn’t going to be an option for us, so we never gave up, even through trying times. We always knew we loved each other, even though there were days we didn’t always like each other. Marriage is hard, but you can’t give up just because something or someone else looks better, or because it isn’t as “fun” as it used to be.
We’re empty nesters now with grandchildren, and we continue every day to try to make each other happy. The determination to make it through anything without giving up and treating each other and the relationship as a unified force, we are happy and still enjoy each other’s company. If you’ve got a good wife or good husband, cherish and nurture each other and the relationship, but most of all, IF you chose well, never give up!
