Email of the Day: Our Family Makes Fitness a Priority

Written by Dr. Laura | 6/21/23 8:45 AM

I am a mom to four kids. We are beyond busy, exhausted, and all the rest of the usual excuses. However, being fit is a priority. We don’t try; we just do it. I am a competitive long-distance runner, and I work out with and without a trainer, even if it’s just for a half-hour at a time.

Here’s how we make it work. Every morning my husband leaves for the gym at 4AM. I do the “kids off to school” duty. Then I exercise. When they’re home, I sit on our stationary bike for an hour while they nap or play among themselves. I could be folding laundry or scrolling on social media, but the energy and pride I get from being a fit mama helps not only me, but our family dynamic.

On weekends, my husband and I switch off workouts between soccer and basketball and play practice. In the summer, one of us drives the kids to a park, and the other runs there, and then we trade places. My husband trained for an ultra-marathon this way.

We just do it, even when we’re tired. We eat clean and healthy, but we’re not “loony” strict. Our kids don’t own devices and downtime for them is playing anything with a ball, and preferably outside.

Keep up your tough love messages by holding people accountable for their bodies. Challenge their excuses. People say “you’re so lucky” having a fit body. Luck? Uh-uh. No such luck, no magic – just sacrifice, commitment and prioritization.
