Email of the Day: Sweet Memories of My Dad

Written by Dr. Laura | 6/17/21 8:15 AM

My father died of pancreatic cancer when he was 76 years old. Besides my husband, he was the finest man I ever knew. If I had the opportunity to say one more thing to him, it would be “Thank you so much for being the man you are and for raising me to be me.” He taught me a great work ethic, how to be a good role model by his example, and how to be a moral person. I was so blessed to live close by to him, so my children also had his guidance. When I think about my dad, I still feel like a little girl and easily cry. He is, and always will be, my hero. We talked about his impending death quite openly, and I told him that heaven was going to spit him out and send him back to earth!

When I was growing up, he would get up early and work in the yard on Saturdays, and I’d help. When I was nine years old, we were up before dawn, and he said “Let’s go see if we can catch the sun before it comes up.” We hopped in the car and did see the sun rise. I love that sweet memory of me and him.

My dad lived a memorable life. He left his wife of 54 years, 4 children, 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. I am still honored to be his daughter.
