Email of the Day: The Difference Between Sensual and Sexual

Written by Dr. Laura | 3/5/24 9:15 AM

I listened to your Deep Dive podcast today titled "The Book I Never Wrote," and a man called about not feeling connected to his wife. You talked to him about being sensual, not sexual. You were EXACTLY right.

A few days ago, my wife called me on her way home from work, stressed and venting to me. I told her to go lay in our bed for a “non-sensual” massage. In my male (and admittedly sex-driven) brain, I thought “sensuality” and “sexuality” were different words with the same definition. Upon listening to your call, I now realize just how wrong I was. It was a sensual massage, but not a sexual massage. She was stressed and tired from work. I wanted to give her non-sexual physical pleasure. I genuinely just wanted to show her how much I love her and appreciate her as a wife. When the massage was done, she initiated some of the most connected and mind-blowing sex we have ever had! She rocked my world.

I write you this because I thought if you read this you would get a good laugh out of my complete ignorance to the difference between sensual and sexual.
