Email of the Day: The Little Things Matter in a Marriage

Written by Dr. Laura | 3/1/21 9:15 AM

After many years of being told by women I once admired that I needed to be strong, powerful and have a big career, I found you and you showed me the light. I have learned from you to be the wife my husband deserves. I’ve learned that it’s okay to be a stay-at-home mom, because that’s the most important job I could ever have. I’ve learned that my husband (who never complains about carrying the full financial responsibility for our family) was to be appreciated.

I’ve learned that saying “thank you” to him is important and doesn’t make me a “subpar” woman. I’ve learned that he is wonderful for allowing me to be the mom I never had. The handsome man I have at my side is one to be valued. The little things I say and do for him matter. And we have a son who can look up to his father and be taught what it is to be a MAN. Having my son see his mother love and appreciate his father is a good thing.

I was not taught this by my mother or by my teachers. I was taught this by you. I’ve learned what the proper care and feeding of husbands truly means. And to think we were taught to think those little things were annoying and didn’t matter! Let him have them and, as his wife, you’ll get back so much more. Thank you for straightening me out and for being the light at the end of a very dark tunnel.
