Email of the Day: To Get Love, You Have to Give Love

Written by Dr. Laura | 2/17/22 9:15 AM

When I was first married, I was a full-time student and working at a job in the field I was studying. After being on the job for a week, I started feeling like a bad wife because I didn’t have any time for my husband. Then on my first Friday, I came home from a 19-hour day to a hot, candlelit bubble bath that my husband had drawn for me. After giving him a big, sloppy kiss and hug, I grabbed one of your books and settled in for a nice, long soak. With my priorities now straightened out, I began brainstorming little ways to remind my husband every day how much I loved him and that he, above all else, was my “number ONE.”

So, the next week and every week thereafter, I have written him little love notes. We met in person to have lunch together during the week. And most importantly, during the week, I MADE time for sex. It didn’t matter if I had to get up in four hours or not – the closeness with my husband was (and still is) so worth it.

My husband told me that one of his co-workers stopped him on his way out the door from work, told him he was a lucky man, and said he wished his wife treated him half as well as I treated my husband. That’s when my guy said “I don’t know what to tell you. I found a gem.” I am happy and proud to be my husband’s gem! Thank you for reminding me that to get love, I have to first give love. Giving is so much better than getting! That smile on his face is priceless.
