Email of the Day: We Watched a Baby Robin Test His Wings

I always love hearing your stories about mother birds and the chicks in their nest. That story came to life recently while my husband and I were chatting over coffee, when THUD, a small bird flew into a window right where we were sitting! I jumped to see if it was injured, but my husband said β€œHe’s okay. Mama is in the tree watching. She knows he can do this.”

For weeks, we’ve been observing from a distance a robin’s nest in our apple tree, watching the babies grow and wondering when it would be time for them to leave the nest. Mama Robin picked a rainy day to let her young ones try out their wings and the one little guy we saw did it with great finesse, albeit he was a bit dazed from the impact! He shook it off as mama watched, and off he went. All the babies have now flown, and mama has returned once to check the empty nest before moving on.

I’m a mama bird who is happy to report that all three of our human babies have flown the nest and learned to fly on their own, despite many obstacles in the way. My husband is a quiet man and his comment about the baby bird reminded me of why he was and still is such a good father.

A loyal listener,

Patty
